week 12: this week i'm gonna... help children learn to read
When Jenny Petty began volunteering with Reading Partners, she was impressed with the program and its expertise in providing individualized instruction with measurable results for each student. Then she met Portia*: a third grader two years behind in her reading skills.
Jenny was enamored with Portia's warm, fun personality and together the pair made great strides. Portia and Jenny formed a strong bond of friendship having fun playing hopscotch or performing card tricks while learning.
Portia increased her reading confidence and bonded greatly with her tutor. As Jenny puts it, “with her funny anecdotes, her intense concentration, and drive to perfection, Portia blossomed into a confident, more fluent reader.” In the year they worked as a team, Portia advanced two full reading levels.
Reading Partners is a nonprofit literacy organization that is dedicated to unlocking the skills of students who struggle with reading. Reading Partners works with under-resourced schools across the country and engages volunteer reading partners (community tutors) to help students develop the foundational skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
An evidence-based and community-driven organization, Reading Partners recruits and trains volunteers to work one-on-one with students for 45 minutes twice a week, following a structured, research-based curriculum. Their program model works and is backed by evidence-based research which proves that their students make significant gains in reading. On average, Reading Partners’ students more than double their rate of learning while in the program. Their highly-effective program has helped thousands of children master the fundamental reading skills they need to succeed in school, career, and beyond.

When Jenny reflects on her time with Portia, she remains in awe of Portia's hunger for learning and her innate need to give back. With Jenny's help, Portia purchased 5 books, carefully scripted labels in each book, wrapped them, and then delivered them as a gift to Reading Partners. Elated, Portia shyly explained, "I have never given a gift like that to anyone before!” Portia fully understood the impact of her present to Reading Partners, as her books will be used by future generations of Reading Partner students. Portia is now a Reading Partners legend.
