week 10:  this week i'm gonna... invest in girls

Kate Stockbridge

Kate Stockbridge

Meet Kate Stockbridge.  Kate is a freshman at Connecticut College and a 2015 graduate of Milton Academy in Milton, MA.  Kate wasn’t sure what to expect when she attended her first Invest in Girls workshop, but she quickly learned that she was part of something good! Kate’s instructor, Gabbie, mentored her throughout high school and advised her to apply for the ANNpower Vital Voices Initiative, which she was chosen for and attended in summer 2014.

ANNpower is a groundbreaking partnership between ANN INC. (the parent company of Ann Taylor, LOFT and Lou & Grey) and Vital Voices that strives to empower young women from across the U.S. to effect global progress, invest in their communities, and begin their journeys as the next generation of leaders. At the leadership forum, Kate was exposed to many inspiring and successful women, including Hilary Clinton. It was here that she learned the 5-step leadership model and the idea for her program, BOLD, was sparked.

Invest in Girls was founded in 2010 by a group of women passionate about narrowing the gender gap in Financial Services leaders.  IIG teaches high school girls financial concepts, exposes them to professional women role models, and introduces them to financial services companies and career paths in finance to empower them to become tomorrow’s leaders.

IIG is now teaching financial concepts to more than 1250 girls in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and New York. Girls enroll in IIG starting in their sophomore year and continue participation throughout their high school career.

Kate’s experience with Invest in Girls directly influenced her current project, BOLD - a media literacy after-school program aimed at empowering girls and strengthening their self-image. BOLD teaches how to critically analyze media and recognize the stereotypes portrayed, rather than passively internalize them.  This provides girls with the ability to develop self-identity without media-induced pressures to conform to certain ideals.

Kate is taking the concepts of empowerment and strength that she learned from her time with IIG and passing them on to a new generation of global trailblazing women. We support that girl power!

Check out the BOLD website and see what some BOLD participants have to say about the program in the video below:
